Kumiko is a Japanese woodworking technique used to create intricate, wooden, functional artwork. This technique was the literal centerpiece of my design, with the rest incorporating a simple modern style, with the intent of highlighting an ancient woodworking technique. Drawing inspiration from Japanese shoji screens, I was able to create a delicate table top that when paired with this modern table base, creates an eye catching design. Because this lattice work is so time consuming, it has generally fallen on the wayside, excepting accent pieces in modern furniture. In total there are 238 pieces that make up the lattice and over 900 cuts were needed to fit the pieces together. A true exercise in patience, but a nice reprieve from the usual hustle and bustle of the shop. The time and energy that went into this piece is evident not only in the lattice, but in the sharp crisp lines and smooth surfaces that make up this table. Blurring the line between furniture and art, this table is sure to be a conversation piece for many years to come. BUILD | BEAUTIFUL
